BYTE BACK IS ONE OF TEN ORGANIZATIONS NATIONWIDE AWARDED AARP INCOME GRANT!

We are excited to share with you that Byte Back is one of ten organizations nationwide to be awarded the AARP Income Grant! AARP recognizes that folks age 50 and older have been particularly hard hit by the recession. Byte Back will receive a $160,000 two-year grant to provide computer training and assistance with obtaining employment to a thousand seniors in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. Byte Back Executive Director Kelley Ellsworth said, “We are delighted to be in a position to help older workers gain the latest technological skills that in turn will allow them new employment opportunities in fields that will pay a living wage.”

Funding from AARP will allow Byte Back to retrain older workers to better compete in their previous careers or to obtain mid-level information technology (IT) positions. In 2010 we created a special computer course customized for the learning styles and interests of seniors. In FY11, Byte Back served a total of 448 senior citizens: 388 took our PC for Beginners class, but many more moved on to learn new technology skills. A total of 124 took our Office Track class, eighteen took our Community Academy classes, and 23 took certification classes. Byte Back’s senior program will include tutoring, mentoring, financial literacy, job search assistance and job readiness preparation. Concurrently, students will learn how to access needed services while in training and seeking employment.

“We are grateful to AARP,” Ms. Ellsworth explained, “for meeting such a critical need in our community. Older workers can bring great value to the workplace, including experience, stability, a solid work ethic, and good customer service skills. In many cases, they just need to supplement their knowledge with solid technology skills.”
