Announcing Byte Back's New Mission Statement

Byte Back is entering 2019 with a clear vision. We’re focused on offering students a pathway of tech training to help them reach their career goals, this year and beyond.

We are proud to introduce a mission statement that matches our commitment to inclusive education and our students’ success in launching living-wage careers that use technology.

Introducing Byte Back’s Mission:

Byte Back provides a pathway of inclusive tech training that leads to living-wage careers.

Why did we need to update the mission?

A clearly communicated mission is important to a focused organization. Byte Back staff, Board, and volunteers have a clear goal with this mission. It also helps you, our community members, know us and understand the impact of the organization.

Our previous mission used the term “underserved” to describe our students. Byte Back students are so much more than “underserved,” and we thought this term didn’t do them justice. Our mission, like our work every day, now reflects what our students will achieve and where they are going.

Lastly, we’re so proud as an organization to be expanding. In 2017, we launched courses in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and this year we’re going beyond the DC metro area to launch our program in Baltimore. As we work to expand tech within reach beyond the District, we knew our mission couldn’t be limited by geography.

Introducing Byte Back’s Values

In addition to having a renewed focus with a clear mission, Byte Back Executive Director Elizabeth Lindsey recently led staff in a process of defining the organization’s values. We spent several sessions discussing what is most important to us as an organization.

We came together, first in small groups in front of white boards and then as one large group, to clearly define our values and how we practice them every day. We’re proud to share these with our community and to work as a team with students every day to achieve our mission together.
